Mercer County was formed March 12, 1800, from Allegheny County. The United States census reported 3228 residents in 1800. It was named for General Hugh Mercer, a Revolutionary hero killed at the Battle of Princeton in 1777. The county became an early iron and coal center, and Mercer, the county seat, was incorporated in 1814.
