Rosedale Beach Hotel and Resort stood here from the early 1900s to the 1970s as a major East Coast destination for people of color during the pre-integration era, when few places offered entertainment and hotel accommodations. Officially incorporated on April 14, 1937, the resort included a hotel, boardwalk, dance hall, picnic and beach area, campground, and amusement park, and it hosted performers including Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, James Brown, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Fats Domino, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Jackie Wilson, and Stevie Wonder. After Delaware integrated its beaches, hotels, and other public facilities, visitation began to decline, and after the storm of 1962 destroyed the boardwalk and it was never replaced, people continued visiting until the mid-1970s before the property was sold to Gull Point Inc. in 1983.
