Murphy Street was named in honor of Archibald DeBow Murphey, 1777-1832, known as the Father of North Carolina Public Schools, who was a graduate, professor, and trustee of the State University, an advocate of public schools and internal improvements, and a diligent explorer of North Carolina history.
