California’s state history museum in Sacramento, housed in the March Fong Eu Secretary of State Building complex, began as a project to better house public archives and present the state’s heritage to a wider audience. Completed in 1995 and opened in 1998, it first emphasized California State Archives materials before broadening in the 2000s to highlight the diversity of California’s people and experiences, especially women and communities often omitted from older narratives. Its exhibitions examine Native American, Chinese Californian, women’s, and Japanese American history, while the California Hall of Fame honors influential figures. The museum also serves about 50,000 students annually and expanded online programs after the COVID-19 pandemic.
