The Temple was created in 1976 by uniting the Reform congregations Adath Israel and Brith Sholom. Adath Israel was chartered by Kentucky in 1842 as the oldest Jewish congregation in Kentucky, the seventh Reform congregation in the U.S., and a founder of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. It adopted the ritual of Isaac M. Wise, founder of Reform Judaism, in 1855. Brith Sholom was formed in 1880 by German Jews who wanted a traditional service but tended toward reform, and it joined the UAHC in 1920. As Jewish families moved farther east, the site was relocated and the congregations consolidated in 1976. The temple was dedicated in 1980, and its cemetery is on Preston Highway.
