San Bernardino de Sena Estancia, later known as the Asistencia, began in 1819 as a ranch outpost of Mission San Gabriel Arcángel in present-day Redlands, serving cattle operations and the incorporation of Serrano and Cahuilla people into the mission community. A second estancia was built around 1830 at Politana rancheria. After mission secularization in 1833–34, the property passed into private hands and in 1842 became part of Rancho San Bernardino. It was later owned by leaders of the San Bernardino Latter-day Saint settlement and then by Dr. Ben Barton. The original adobe complex fell into ruin, and the county acquired the site in 1925. The building seen today is a 20th-century reconstruction, opened in 1937 and now used for limited visits and events.
