San Bernardino Asistencia of Mission San Gabriel was begun about 1830 as a link in a proposed inland mission chain and as an outpost of the San Gabriel Mission on land selected for a new estancia, later misidentified as an asistencia. Construction began on adobe buildings, but the project was never completed and was abandoned about 1834 after the secularization decree of 1834. It was probably the last structure erected by mission authorities in California, marking the last chapter in the building of the California missions. In 1836, the Mexican government secularized church lands in Alta California.
