Bartholomew Scott Calvin, a full-blooded Delaware Indian whose native name was Shawuskukhkung, meaning United Grass, was born about 1756 at an Indian village near Crosswicks in Burlington County, New Jersey. In his second year at Princeton College, he left to fight in the service of General George Washington as a scout and interpreter with various Pennsylvania military units during the Revolutionary War. He is recognized as a Patriot by both the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Sons of the American Revolution. After the war, he returned to the Delaware Tribe in New Jersey, where he succeeded his father, Stephen Calvin, as the schoolmaster at the local school.
