Nature
Goosenest is a mountain in the northern California Cascades near Mount Shasta, formed as a shield volcano with a pyroclastic cone at its summit. It is unusual in its region because it grew larger and remained active longer than the shorter-lived shield volcanoes more typical there. Built by basaltic to basaltic andesitic lava flows, it represents a relatively uncommon volcanic combination in the area. Its edifice is estimated at 10 cubic kilometers in volume, and its eruptions spread flows across about 60 square kilometers. Goosenest remains significant as a volcanic landform showing both broad shield-building activity and a later summit cone.
