Butte Valley National Grassland is an 18,425-acre protected grassland in far northern California near the Oregon border, managed within Klamath National Forest. Dedicated in July 1991 as the nation’s 20th National Grassland, it remains California’s only one. Set in the Klamath River basin, its open, dry landscape is defined by sandy soils, a dry lake bed, and low rainfall, with broad views of the Cascades and Mount Shasta. The valley was heavily altered by late 19th-century homesteading, then acquired by the federal government in 1937 after overuse and drought degraded it. Restoration followed, and today the grassland supports sagebrush habitat and notable birdlife, including raptors and seasonal songbirds.
