Hotlum Glacier lies on the northeast flank of Mount Shasta in California and is the state’s largest and most voluminous glacier. It occupies a high basin below the Hotlum Headwall, beginning in a cirque at about 13,600 feet and flowing northeast down the volcano before splitting into three lobes that end near 10,400 feet. Though it contains more ice than any other glacier in California, it is not as thick or long as nearby Whitney Glacier. A 2002 survey, the first in 50 years, found that Hotlum was among seven Mount Shasta glaciers that had grown since 1951, nearly doubling in size.
