Warrior Rock Light, on Sauvie Island in Oregon, marks a bedrock reef on the Columbia River near Portland and is known as the state’s smallest lighthouse as well as an unusual inland light away from the Pacific coast. Navigation aids stood here by 1877, and a permanent lighthouse authorized in 1888 was built the next year to a design by Carl Leick. The original wood-frame station, with quarters, beacon, and fog bell, was replaced in 1930 by the present 28-foot concrete tower. After a barge strike in 1969 destroyed its foundation and disabled the light and bell, the station continued in operation with automated equipment.
