Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, west of Ridgefield, Washington, protects more than 5,200 acres of marshes, grasslands, and woodlands along the Columbia River. Established in 1965 to provide winter habitat for waterfowl, it became especially important for the dusky Canada goose after the 1964 Alaska earthquake damaged nesting grounds. Its several units are managed for different conservation purposes, from preserving the Columbia floodplain to supporting wetland wildlife. The refuge is a major stop for migrating birds and nesting species, supports diverse mammals, and helped the Columbian white-tailed deer recover through relocations begun in 2012. A new Community Nature Center opened at the Carty Unit in May 2026.
