Seven Shay brothers enrolled in 1861 and served in the 93rd PA. Volunteers during the Civil War: Isaac Shay, a shoemaker, born 1826 and died 1862; William Shay, a furnacer, born 1827 and died 1899; Cyrus Shay, a miner, born 1832; Simon Shay, a painter, born 1835 and died 1900; Daniel Shay, a laborer, born 1836 and died 1863; Jacob Shay, a farmer, born 1842 and died 1863; and John Shay, a miner, born 1843. They were the sons of Captain John Shay, who served in the Revolutionary War, and lived in a log house near the site of the old mining office in Miners Village, Pa.
