Toll Bridge
Industry
1
During the oil boom of the 1860s, the area drew far more people than could profit directly from oil, and some instead made money through support services such as transportation. Until 1865, Oil Creek could be crossed only by ferry or ford, but the Maple Shade Oil Company and the Central Petroleum Company, which owned land on either side, built a toll bridge here that year.
