Created in 1865 by the discovery of oil, Pithole became within a few months a boom town of 15,000 with banks, churches, hotels, a newspaper, a post office, a water system, and a railroad. In less than a year, oil wells began to go dry, and in time only excavations and street lines remained. The site is about two miles northeast.
