Oil Creek State Park preserves the valley where the American petroleum industry began after Colonel Edwin L. Drake and driller William A. Smith brought in the first successful commercial oil well on August 27, 1859, near Titusville. That strike quickly transformed the region with transport, refineries, iron works, and boomtown growth, but also brought disaster, including the 1880 Black Friday fire and deadly explosions in 1892. As oil production later declined, the heavily logged land was reclaimed, especially during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Today the park combines that industrial legacy with restored forest, streams, trails, and recreation.
