An earthen wall and nine mounds were once a prominent part of the landscape here. Early explorers described the largest mound, or Great Mound, as eighty-two feet high, the tallest mound known in Louisiana. The earthworks were built between one hundred B.C. and A.D. seven hundred. Only portions of the mounds and wall remain.
