Denton on the Choptank River was once a thriving port forty miles inland from the river’s mouth, and this site centers on the restored Joppa steamboat wharf and terminal from the 1800s as part of the Choptank River Heritage Center. The center connects the history of the Eastern Shore’s longest river with the history of the land and its people, while the Wharves of Choptank Crossing also participates in the Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network, which promotes appreciation, enjoyment, and conservation of the people, places, plants, and animals of the Chesapeake Bay watershed from New York to Virginia.
