Fort Stamford was built and garrisoned for the defense of the people in these parts during the War for American Independence. The site was later associated with the Stamford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, which erected a memorial on September 14, 1926, and later relocated and rededicated it on October 17, 1999.
