Claremore Mound, a rocky rise near the Verdigris River in northeastern Oklahoma, is closely linked to Osage and Cherokee history. Around 1802, the Osage established Pasona on its summit and Pasuga at its base. In June 1817, Pasuga was attacked during the Battle of Strawberry Moon by a Cherokee force and its allies under Chief Spring Frog, leaving thirty-eight Osage dead, including Chief Glahmo, and 104 captives. The violence shaped regional relations for years, as Glahmo’s son Wah-tianka led reprisals. The mound’s later name also reflects that history, evolving from Clermont, a name tied to Glahmo, into Claremore through an 1874 clerical error.
