Built in 1911, the ranch blacksmith shop was one of the ranch's most important areas, producing objects ranging from mundane to decorative and supporting daily work by shoeing horses, repairing farming equipment, and keeping wagons and tack in working order. Rings on the shop's pillars were used to tie horses, and most work took place at the forge, where fire heated wrought iron or steel until it was pliable enough to shape with tools. The shed housed various other farming tools. Many building materials at the site contain fossils of prehistoric sea creatures that once lived in the area, including brachiopod fossils and seashells.
