Angel Peak Scenic Area in northwestern New Mexico lies about 15 miles south of Bloomfield and spans more than 10,000 acres of rugged badlands, deep canyons, and rimrock centered on Angel Peak. Its dramatic scenery comes from contrasting rock formations: Angel Peak and the higher surrounding ground are part of the Eocene San Jose Formation, while the lower badlands belong to the older Paleocene Nacimiento Formation. This geology creates eroded slopes, sharply cut canyon country, and broad views over the Kutz Canyon badlands. The area is used mainly for sightseeing and camping, with picnic areas, a campground, a short nature trail, and access from County Road 7175 off US 550.
