During World War II, the USAT Dorchester was torpedoed by German submarine U-456 off Greenland on February 3, 1943, with 904 men aboard, and 605 were lost. Among those who died were Lt. Alexander D. Goode, who was Jewish, Lt. George L. Fox, who was Protestant, Lt. Clark V. Poling, who was Protestant, and Lt. John P. Washington, who was Catholic.
