Early on June 8, 1864, Confederate States of America forces under Gen. John H. Morgan, on his tragic last raid, attacked the Union camp here under Capt. Edward Barlow. The Confederates took 380 prisoners and material, and took $59,000 from Farmers' Bank. Leaving a force here under Col. H. L. Giltner, Morgan moved west with the 2nd Brigade. The next morning the Confederates were driven out. Joined by Morgan, they took Lexington the following day.
