During Morgan's Raiders' last raid through Kentucky, the Farmers Bank vault in this building was robbed of $60,000. Late on the night of June 8, 1864, several of Morgan's men went to the house of cashier J. O. Miller and took the vault key from him. The money was never recovered, and it was believed to have gone to the Confederate cause. In 1866, Farmers Bank filed a civil suit in Anderson Co. against Lt. J. F. Witherspoon and was awarded a judgment of $59,057.33 in damages, but on appeal Witherspoon was found not liable because the Court of Appeals held that under the laws of war the robbery was not unlawful and there was no proof he was more guilty than any other in Morgan's command.
