Woodchute Wilderness is a 5,923-acre protected area in Prescott National Forest in central Arizona, west of Jerome, covering the slopes of Woodchute Mountain from about 5,500 to 7,800 feet. Its name preserves the memory of a chute once used to send wood down the mountain to historic Jerome, linking the area to the region’s mining-era working landscape. Today it is managed for preservation and low-impact recreation. Its vegetation shifts with elevation, from pinyon pine and Utah juniper below to ponderosa pine above, and it supports black bear, elk, cougar, deer, and bald and golden eagles. Only two trails cross the wilderness, helping keep access limited.
