Known as “Uncle Billy” Smith, William A. Smith drilled the world's first successful oil well in 1859 with tools he made in his blacksmith shop near Tarentum. The well, 69½ feet deep, was drilled near Titusville for Colonel Edwin Drake. “Uncle Billy” died in 1890 and is buried about 120 feet southeast of here.
