Gass Peak
Nature
Gass Peak, the highest summit in the Las Vegas Range at 6,937 feet, rises north of Las Vegas and stands as a prominent feature on the valley skyline within the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. Named for early settler and rancher Octavius Decatur Gass, it has long been a familiar landmark because of its visibility from the city and its broad summit views into surrounding counties and neighboring states. The mountain is open to public access by roads leading to trailheads and campsites, though hiking routes are unmaintained. On November 26, 2019, a Cirrus SR22 crashed into the summit, killing all three aboard.
