Dignity of Earth and Sky is a monumental stainless steel sculpture on a bluff above the Missouri River near Chamberlain, South Dakota, created by artist laureate Dale Claude Lamphere to honor the state’s Lakota and Dakota peoples and the Indigenous peoples of the Great Plains. Given to the state by Norm and Eunabel McKie in 2014 for the 125th anniversary of statehood and erected in September 2016, it depicts an Indigenous woman holding a star quilt designed to move in the wind. Visible from Interstate 90, the 50-foot work has become one of South Dakota’s most recognizable public monuments and a statewide emblem.
