At Averasboro, the John C. Smith home, Oak Grove, built in 1793, and the William T. Smith home, built in 1834, served as Union hospitals during the Battle of Averasboro, while the Farquhard Smith home, Lebanon, built in 1825, served as a Confederate hospital. The site also includes Chicora Cemetery on the Averasboro battleground in Harnett County, North Carolina, in 1865, along with the Old Raleigh and Fayetteville Highway roadbed, crossings at McAllister Millcreek, also called Bumpus Creek, and Fishpond Branch, the old road leading to Joel Williams Mill on McAllister Millcreek, the remains of Joel Williams mill, and a millstone from that mill.
