Canopy Shores Park lies along the Matanzas River, an area that has attracted human activity for thousands of years. Indigenous people took advantage of higher terrain, drained soils, and a multitude of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems along the shore. Adjacent marshlands served as a food source, and well-drained soils helped support habitable and prosperous native communities. The surrounding region is suspected to have been the site of a large Timucuan village before the arrival of Europeans. Large shell middens and other features indicate intensive, long-term occupation of this region across a 4,000-year span, as well as historic material dating to the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
