Beacon Mountain, or Mount Beacon, is the highest peak in the Hudson Highlands, with twin summits overlooking the Hudson River and the city of Beacon. Its name reflects its Revolutionary War use as a signal-fire site watching the Hudson and military traffic near West Point, a role that also gave the city its name. Later features show its changing uses: a monument placed in 1901 near the original beacon site, a Civilian Conservation Corps fire tower built in 1931 on the southern summit and reopened in 2013 after restoration, and the remains of the Mount Beacon Incline Railway. Protected watershed lands have also helped make the mountain a popular hiking destination.
