Breakneck Ridge rises on the Hudson River between Beacon and Cold Spring, New York, along the boundary of Dutchess and Putnam counties. With Storm King Mountain across the river, it forms Wey-Gat, or Wind Gate, the northern entrance to the Hudson Highlands. Its steep western and southern cliffs, partly shaped by earlier quarrying, make it one of the region’s most recognizable landmarks. Now part of Hudson Highlands State Park, it is a major hiking destination known for sweeping river views and heavy visitor use. A Metro-North flag stop serves the base, and since 2021 the Ninham Trail has provided an alternate ascent and easier descent alongside the original one-way uphill route.
