Six soldiers of the Revolutionary War later became residents of Holmes County, Ohio. Soldiers of the War of A.D. 1812 also became citizens of Holmes County. More than two hundred men from Holmes County served in the War with Mexico and fought at Cerro Gordo, Contreras, Cherubusco, Molino Del Ray, Chapultepec, and San Cosme. During the War of the Rebellion, two thousand and fourteen men went from Holmes County in response to different government calls and were engaged in many battles from Philippi to Appomattox. In July 1976, the memorial was rededicated in honor of veterans who served their country during the Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
