The Hyde Park Foot Bridge was designed by the John A. Roebling’s Sons Co. of Trenton, NJ, and built of wood on the piers of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s former East Leechburg Bridge in 1920. The original bridge washed away in the St. Patrick’s Day Flood of 1936. Rebuilt in 1937, it became unsafe by 1948. Engineer Carl Jacobsen updated the original drawings for steel construction, and Freeland Construction Co. of Pittsburgh built the present three-span, 600-foot-long wire rope suspension bridge. Opened in September 1950, it is officially known as Armstrong County Bridge No. 13. Locally known as “The Walking Bridge,” it has connected the people of Leechburg and Hyde Park for over a century.
