During World War II, Captain David H. McClintock of Marquette, Captain B. Dulaney Claggett of Bethesda, Maryland, and the officers and men of the submarines Darter and Dace helped change the course of the Battle for Leyte Gulf in the Philippines from October 23-26, 1944, through their contact reports and torpedoes, contributing to the end of the Japanese navy as an offensive force. It also honors all American submariners, especially the more than 3,500 who gave their lives to help preserve the freedoms enjoyed today.
