Early Morgan pioneers included Charles Shreeve Peterson, who helped carve a road through Weber Canyon and served as the first Probate Judge; George Washington Taggart, who helped build the first grist mill and was a Mormon Battalion member; Thomas Jefferson Thurston, a builder of roads and canals and the first bishop in the valley; Sanford Porter, the original settler of Porterville, who built a sawmill and cut ties for the railroad; Thomas and Jane Brough, who provided church leadership and community service; Jesse Carter Little, a military, civic, and church leader who built roads and established the first post office; Willard G. Smith, a community builder, the first Stake President and Probate Judge, and a survivor of Haun's Mill; Samuel and Esther Francis, leaders in church and civic affairs; and Albert Douglas Dickson, a peacemaker, canal builder, and bishop for 37 years.
