Mount Brighton, opened in 1961 in Brighton, Michigan, brought commercial skiing to a region without natural mountains by building man-made slopes with a 230-foot vertical rise. The 130-acre resort features 25 runs, chairlifts and surface lifts, terrain for all skill levels, and a terrain park. Because natural snowfall is insufficient, nearly all of its snow is made with water from an on-site reservoir. The slopes were built from excess road debris from construction of Interstate 96 and US 23, not from a landfill as local legend held. Long important as a training hill for southeast Michigan, it later expanded with a golf course and changed ownership in 2012.
