During the 1778 - 1779 winter encampment of the Revolutionary War, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Continental Artillery, along with artificers and armourers, were stationed here under the command of General Henry Knox. The site of this cantonment was located and confirmed by the Pluckemin Archaeological Project, a dig begun in 1980 and still in progress on the 12 acres of land comprising the encampment.
