Settled before 1790, this area was often the scene of bloody strife with Indians. Evidence indicates that a settlement was made at the present site of Hartford in 1782, the first fortified place in the lower Green River Valley. The land was donated by Gabriel Madison as part of a 4,000 acre Virginia grant in 1782, and the name Hartford came from the river ford where animals crossed.
