Rooster Rock is a butte in Monument Valley on Navajo Nation land in northeastern Arizona, rising to 5,985 feet and standing out for its steep profile, with the summit climbing nearly 900 feet above the surrounding terrain in only a quarter mile. Its runoff flows to Gypsum Creek, a tributary of the San Juan River, and the nearest higher landform is Meridian Butte. The butte is part of Monument Valley’s classic erosional landscape, shaped by softer Organ Rock Shale on the lower slopes and harder De Chelly Sandstone in the upper cliffs, both laid down during the Permian period. The region has a semi-arid climate with hot summers, cold winters, and little annual precipitation.
