Camelback Mountain, or Big Pocono, is a striking part of Pennsylvania’s Pocono Plateau that looks like a separate mountain from the south, east, and north but is actually a peninsular section of a glaciated plateau. Its shape reflects at least three southward glacial movements from Canada that scoured and flattened the plateau and left regional features such as peat bogs, swamps, and undrained depressions. Big Pocono stands out because it rises about 1,000 feet above surrounding land on three sides, though from the west it is nearly level with the plateau. Its summit contains Big Pocono State Park and the Camelback Mountain Resort ski area, with outlooks offering far-reaching views in clear weather.
