Route 66, known as "The Main Street of America," "The Mother Road," and "The Will Rogers Highway," served as a lifeline for the World War II effort and for thousands of families fleeing the Dust Bowl Era. Travel along Route 66 was immortalized in the songs of Woody Guthrie and Bobby Troup and in a weekly television show. The culture associated with the road remains alive today despite the road's death as an official highway, and portions of it are still in use.
