Route 66 was conceived in the mid 1920's by Oklahoma Highway Commissioner Cyrus Stevens Acery and the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads as an all-weather paved highway stretching from densely populated Chicago and the Midwest to the rural West Pacific Ocean. The road began in Grant Park on the shore of Lake Michigan in downtown Chicago and stretched west to the Santa Monica Pier just west of Los Angeles.
