El Palacio Real was a fortress and castle built by order of the Spanish crown from 1610 to 1612. Under Spanish, Mexican, and American rule, it served as the seat of government. From 1610 to 1910, it was the residence of more than one hundred governors and captains general, and it is the oldest public building in the United States.
