The Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe is a long adobe building beside the plaza that served as New Mexico’s seat of government from the early seventeenth century until 1901. Established as the capitol of Nuevo México in 1610, though possibly begun in 1618 under Governor Pedro de Peralta, it witnessed Spanish colonial rule, the Pueblo Revolt, the Spanish return, Mexican independence, and the transition to American territorial government after 1848. In the late 1870s Lew Wallace finished parts of Ben-Hur there. Restored from 1909 to 1913 under Jesse L. Nusbaum, it later housed the state history museum and remains a National Historic Landmark.
