Bob Jones University Museum and Gallery in Greenville, South Carolina, began in 1951 from collecting started in 1948 by Bob Jones Jr. to assemble religious art for the university and the state. Built around sacred art and especially European Old Master paintings, it expanded from two galleries and 25 paintings to more than 200 works by 1962, with holdings that also included sculpture, furniture, textiles, icons, architectural elements, and ancient artifacts. Its collection came to include works by major artists from Italy, northern Europe, Spain, France, Great Britain, and the United States, making it a significant sacred-art collection even as it later entered a period of transition and closure during plans to move downtown.
