Religious services have been held on this site since 1802. A Methodist church was organized here in 1809. Fort Chouteau, built for protection from Indians in 1811, stood 7/8 mile south. Salem camp meetings were held here from 1813 to 1861, and Wanda carried the name of Salem until 1875.
