Near the junction of Rock Creek and Mobile Bay lies Ecor Rouge, the highest coastline point between Maine and Mexico. Aboriginal Indians held powwows and made pottery here. The red cliff appeared as a mariners' landmark on Spanish maps in the 1500's, was called Ecor Rouge by French settlers in the 1700's, was used for a British hospital camp in 1771, and supplied brick in 1818 for rebuilding Fort Morgan.
